A GLOBAL train manufacturer’s County Durham base has won regional recognition for boosting employment and regeneration in the area.

The Hitachi Rail Europe plant at the Merchant Place site at Newton Aycliffe was last night named North-East Project of the Year at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards.

International design practice Ryder Architecture have three projects shortlisted in the prestigious 2018 RICS north east awards.

The awards recognise and reward the best projects from various regions around the UK in eight categories.

DEVELOPERS are closing in on a deal that will create up to 4,500 North-East jobs.

SCHOOL children have been given a behind-the-scenes glimpse at two nearby factories helping to reshape the region’s future.

Thirty year 2 pupils from Heighington Primary, the nearest school to Hitachi’s £82m site on Aycliffe Business Park, have been learning about the history of trains and visited the Railway Museum in Shildon before studying modern day industry.
